2010 was a good year for Virgin Media. They attracted 76,600 new customers and in the fourth quarter reported net income moved £37.1m into the black.
Revenues were up 5.8% to £3.8bn although the number of new customers who signed up to TV fell to 12,100 in the fourth quarter. Total revenues reached £1bn in the fourth quarter , which was the first time that this had happened in any quarter.
Although Virgin media reported a net loss of £141.4m in 2010 this was a big improvement over the £357.8m loss reported in 2009 ( adjusted after the sale of Virgin Media TV and BSkyB last July).
Broadband subscribers were up by 44,100 which was considerably less than the 204,000 announced by Sky and 188,000 by BT. Neil Birkett of Virgin Media reportedly said that it was unfair to judge rival telecoms providers. He said” You can’t compare BT’s and Sky’s service to ours. We sell proper broadband.”
Virgin Media now has 1.5 million subscribers to HD which is approximately 39% of its customer base and it made a net income of £2.6 million in the fourth quarter from its 50% stake in UKTV. Virgin is said to be close to selling its stake to US broadcaster Scripps. Its mobile phone contract customers grew by 27.5% to 1.2 million.
The number of customers who subscribed to fibre optic broadband packages with speeds of 20Mbps or more rose by 40% which was a huge increase .

BT has been told by Ofcom, the telephone regulator that they must reduce the prices that they charge other internet service providers to use its network. They must make reductions of somewhere between 10.75% and 14.75%.
The regulator was reported as saying” Ofcom expects competion between retail ISPs. who will benefit from lower wholesale prices, to lead to reductions in retail prices which benefit customers. The changes may also lead to better quality services by enabling ISPs to allocate more bandwidth per customer which could deliver faster broadband”
BT responded by saying ” It is key that the details strike the right balance between control and incentives to invest in rural areas. As the UK’s main investor in rural broadband, we will engage fully in the consultation process which follows to make our case”
The price cut will come into effect later in the year and is expected to benefit 12 pc of the UK. The reductions are however not good news for BT as they will reduce BT’s revenues by tens of millions of pounds per year.
BT had to open its network to its competors to meet the Governments promise to provide cheaper broadband to everyone in the UK by 2015.

BT has been conducting a nationwide suvey, which they are running as a competition called the Race to Infinity. The five winning areas will be upgraded to superfast fibre broadband by early 2012 at the latest. Businesses and homes have to show there is a local demand for fibre broadband by taking part in the survey.
BT is also commited to engageing with any community who didnt actually win one on the first five positions but where at least 75 per cent of busunesses and homes have voted for super-fast broadband.
In the lead so far is Caxton in Cambridgeshire and Malvern in Worcestershire where more than 1000 votes have been received. Overall more than 200,000 votes have already been cast since the idea was launched on 1 st October 2010. The competition will run until December 31st at bt.com/raceforinfinity .
